The Pakistan Tehreeke Insaf (PTI), which was successful in getting resolutions against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) passed from two provincial assemblies, announced protest outside the ECP office in Islamabad on August 4, calling for the CEC’s resignation.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is scheduled to announce much-anticipated judgement in the 2014 prohibited funding case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday.

The decision that the ECP reserved on June 20 would be made public by a three-member bench that includes Shah Mohammad Jatoi and Nisar Ahmed under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.

The decision comes days after a Financial Times investigative report disclosed how 2.12 million dollars raised in the UK through a donation cricket match ended up in PTI’s accounts, revealing the role played by business tycoon Arif Naqvi in the procedure. The campaign against the CEC has intensified since the panel reserved the judgement.

The investigation proved that the PTI underreported funds, hid dozens of its bank accounts, and accepted support from foreign individuals and businesses.

It also cited the party’s failure to disclose information about significant transactions and the panel’s inability to obtain information on PTI’s foreign accounts and the funds brought in abroad. It also casts doubt on the certificate that PTI Chairman Imran Khan supplied with the information on the organization’s audited accounting.

Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of PTI, filed the lawsuit, which has been pending since November 14, 2014. Serious financial problems in the party’s fundraising from Pakistan and overseas, according to Mr. Babar. Imran khan and the leaders of his party have rejected any illegality and argue that the money is coming from legal sources.

After nearly four years and as many as 95 hearings, the ECP’s scrutiny committee, which was established in March 2018 to analyse the PTI’s foreign funding within a month, finally filed its findings on January 4.

The report, which was based on eight volumes of records requisitioned through the State Bank of Pakistan, acknowledged that the PTI leadership had broken funding laws gravely by permitting the collection of millions of dollars and billions of rupees from outsiders, including Indian nationals and foreign corporations, without providing a source or any other information.

The dispute regarding four PTI officials accepting funds in their individual accounts was also mentioned in the report, however it was said that investigating their accounts was outside the purview of the study’s investigation.

PTI will protesting outside ECP

On Monday, the PTI chairman called for a demonstration outside the ECP to demand the resignation of CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja. He declared: “The assembly of Punjab and KP voted resolutions condemning the CEC, demonstrating their lack of faith in him. The upcoming general elections should in no terms be handled by the commission.

Speaking before the party’s national board, Mr. Khan claimed that despite the PTI government’s great effort, the CEC obstructed the introduction of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in order to safeguard the process of cheating for the (PPP) and (PML-N).

On July 30, Imran Khan announced that he would file a complaint with the judicial commission against the CEC, accusing him of meeting with PML-N leaders. Officials from the ECP and the PPP also criticised the choice, calling it a “effort to blackmail” the panel.

Saleem Mandviwalla, the leader of the PPP, had said that the PTI was attempting to delay a judgement in the subject of illegal funding. What took place that caused Imran Khan to lose faith in the CEC? We will support the ECP despite our reservations, he continued.
